Bukhara is compact, so most landmark sights can be covered on foot in a day or two. Start at the Ark Fortress, the historic residence of Bukhara's rulers, which sits conveniently close to the old town. From there, head to the Poi Kalyan complex with the Kalyan Minaret and mosque — the visual center of the city and a must for photos. The Lyab-i Hauz ensemble, with its pond and teahouses, is a good spot to rest between walks. The Toki Zargaron and Toki Sarrafon trading domes also deserve attention, since workshops and small shops still operate inside them. If time allows, visit the Samanid Mausoleum, one of the oldest monuments of Islamic architecture in Central Asia.
